There are lots of reasons why more and more people are cutting out on cow’s milk and exploring alternative substitutes to it. When you visit a supermarket you may find a whole lot of Soya milk, Almond milk, etc. There’s a huge demand for these products, as 6 out of 10 Indian households now use an alternative to traditional milk in smoothies, cereals and cooking.

 

For instance, cow’s milk can be difficult to digest for many; this could be because you have low levels of the lactase enzyme making it hard to digest the sugar (lactose) in cow milk. There are many brands who claim that they have found a way to eliminate lactose from cow’s milk, but a certain percentage it will always remain.

It is a product with protein and sources of calcium. This type of milk contains natural sugars like lactose which is an enzyme that is naturally present in milk. Milk is extracted from non-human mammals during or soon after their pregnancy. We humans regularly consume milk of other mammals after the domestication of animals during the development of agriculture.

 

On the other hand, there has been a concerning link between cancer and dietary hormones – estrogen in particularly present in Cow’s milk and various dairy products. Among the routes of human exposure to estrogen’s, we are mostly concerned about cow’s milk, which contains considerable amounts of female sex hormones.

Soya ‘milk’ can be compared to the protein content of cow’s milk and is also low in fat. Cholesterol levels can be managed through soy-based foods and in order to achieve this you need about 25g soy protein, or 3 to 4 glasses of soya milk a day. Some brands are even fortified with calcium and vitamin A and D. Take care as you may be allergic to soy products, soy must be avoided by men due to high levels of oestrogen.
